Proposed UBC Towers threaten
Pacific Spirit Park and Wreck Beach
The University of British Columbia (UBC) was given a permit to build the first of 4 proposed 20-storey student tower residences for 1960 students just across from the cliff edge of Pacific Spirit Regional Park. The first tower, Phase One, is now complete. Phase Two of the project, including two more proposed towers, has not yet received approval from the GVRD and is the issue of the controversy. The towers threaten Pacific Spirit Regional Park's cliff stability, migratory and resident birds, wildlife habitat, eagle roosts, and viewscapes. Heavy truck movements, with over 24 truck movements a day, send dangerous vibrations to the cliff face and jeopardize the wilderness-like ambience of Wreck Beach.
What You Can Do!
The Wreck Beach Preservation Society urges you to attend the GVRD Board meeting Friday, February 17, where we expect the GVRD Board of Directors to determine whether the UBC proposed high-rise towers violate the GVRD Official Community Plan.

Please attend this critical and potentially historic meeting as major decisions will likely be made about UBC's development proposals. Delegations from WBPS (Wreck Beach Preservation Society) and PSPS (Pacific Spirit Park Society) will speak at the start of the meeting. Please be prompt to show support for the important points they will be making.
Let's show our newly-elected GVRD Board members that Wreck Beach friends and supporters care about preserving the wilderness viewscapes of our beloved beach.
