Dear Decision Makers and Stewards of UBC and GVRD:
Re: Marine Residential Towers.
I strongly oppose the current proposal for this development. The level of housing is far too dense for the site and the towers will have a profoundly negative impact on viewscapes from the beach and Park, as well as on other Park values. I strongly recommend that UBC use an alternative location or design to reduce the impact of this development on the park and beach. The two 18-storey Phase II towers must be lowered on this site. These towers must not show from the beach because this is one of the only beaches in much of the lower mainland not to mention BC that is currently free of urban influence. Many other beaches are already pressed on by towering apartments built for the enjoyment of a privileged minority who are rich enough to buy a view; wreck beach insulated by a cliffs and a park as well as, until recently, a low impact university, has been the only beach to avoid this fate which turns a treasured place into merely an extension of urban throughput. While UBC may be allowing another wave of affluent students and University affiliates to get a chance to live in some of the most sought after real estate in British Columbia, and make a tidy buck while doing so, they are also destroying one of this universities most prized possessions, the safe and secure presence of one of the best beaches in Canada. It will years hence in retrospect to be seen by Students, Vancouverites and the Administration itself as merely another ill thought out money grab that destroys the very thing that made an area so attractive in the first place.
Most sincerely yours,
Michael J Fairchild
